ACM talk OpenStreetMap – October 21 – open source maps

Tags: maps, osm

OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways.

Abstract

Mapping and geolocation is currently one of the hottest trends in technology, with everything from phones to cameras incorporating GPS capability. Most map data though is restricted by stringent copyright laws, which are owned by a few major corporations. This limits access and innovation in the mapping field. OpenStreeMap (OSM) is working to change that.

OpenStreetMap is a global, open source map that anyone anywhere can contribute, edit and use. It could be considered a Wikipedia of maps. OpenStreeMap is licensed through the Creative Commons Share-Alike Attribution license, which allows users to change, improve, add and use the map data in anyway they like.

OpenStreetMap data is making maps available for mobile devices, websites as well as providing a data source for unique mapping initiatives. These include, specialized maps, such as the OpenCycleMap, which filters OSM data for features specific to cycling. This talk will be an introduction to the OpenStreetMap project, its editors and community.

Sarah Manley

I recently moved from Brooklyn, NY to San Francisco, CA, and have been participating in OpenStreetMap since September 2008. I am the Bay Area Community Ambassador, acting as a point person for local events, speaking engagements and partnerships. I am very interested in introducing new communities to OSM because I believe it holds a world of opportunity for many organizations, including local business, non-profits and advocacy groups. I hope to host mapping events that create new partnerships and build the OSM community in the Bay Area. In the near future I plan to host events that involve coordinated bike rides, hiking outings and much more! My past professional experience has been in the environmental and education fields. I worked in NYC as an educator at a green non-profit, focusing on renewable energy technologies, urban ecology and sustainable development. I am also the co-founder of an environmental focused charter school, which will open in Fall 09 in Long Island City, NY. I am currently using my education background to develop a curriculum that focuses on OSM.
